clacking/tapping noise, but would do it all the time, not just on overrun or accel.

Maybe that the small spring has broken and the big spring is keeping the valve shut, so the compression is good, just a thought really mate as so far we/you havent found anything that was making this noise. I never heard the noise so i cant tell what it was like. Might be worth just pulling it apart to have a gander.

I started it with clutch depressed and the noise was still there when revved and when the clutch was down when running it still did it too, with no change in noise.

                  Mark,

I guess you would have felt better if you had found a mechanical explanation of the noise i.e. everything mashed up! Thank the Audi Gods that wasn't the case.
I notice you said in an earlier post that the car sounded "like a diesel". As the typical noise of the diesel is an artefact of the combustion process then I still think what you heard was the uncontrolled combustion in cyls 1 & 5 due to the pistons. To add to the lexicon, people use "dieselling" as an expression for knock!
Let's hope it runs as sweet as a nut!

                      Tom,

this is what I was telling you about earlier today about the colour of the ceramic coating on the two pistons that had the Det damage. You can see that one and five are a lot darker......that coating definately got tested there!!
